Learning More......
Prepare for Sunday
If we want to learn more, and grow in our faith we need to read the Bible. For many, whether they be enquirers or those more mature in faith this is often one of the hardest disciplines to keep. However, a good starting point is to read those portions of scripture selected by the church for the coming Sunday's readings; and if possible, some sort of commentary on them which expands on their meaning.
The Church of England is one of the many churches around the world to use a form of the Revised Common Lectionary. This specifies particular readings for each Sunday and runs on a three year cycle. Many millions of christians therefore, around the world, read, pray and meditate on the same words at the same time - and so can be more open to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
There are two helpful web sites from the worldwide Anglican communion that can help us. The first gives the text of each Sunday's readings the second gives a commentary on the readings. Try downloading the first if you have no Bible available - then print out the second to take your time over.
ONE WORD OF WARNING ! just occasionally the Church of England specifies a different reading for a particular Sunday or your parish priest may have chosen his/her own text to preach on !! Never mind your time will not have been wasted !
