EFFIGY RESTORATION

The work on the effigy of an unknown man circa 1425 is now complete and
paid for thanks to many generous gifts and grants.
The stone effigy was removed from its niche in the north wall, cleaned
and excess plaster removed and the base stabilised before returning the carving
to its place.
Sadly no clue to his identity has been found as the vital front stone
work was removed when a new central heating system was installed in 1923.
The latest thinking is that he might be Sir John Golafre – Knight of the King’s Chamber to
Richard II and husband of Phillipa de
Mohun heiress of Dunster, but we have no proof. The quest for information
continues.
Since the effigy’s replacement the adjoining pews have been
shortened to allow access and easier viewing.
