The Choir
St. Andrew's Choir
was reformed in 1985 for the installation of the then Rector Hugh Allen and has
continued to meet regularly ever since. The job of the choir is to help to
create the right conditions for worship through careful choice of music and
thoughtful interpretation. In fact a choir is one of the oldest established
forms of lay ministry in the church.
St. Andrew's Choir
has nine singers - five sopranos, three contraltos, and a bass. We are
always on the look out for new members - especially Tenors and basses.
The full choir sing
at the Eucharist at St. Andrew's on the second and fourth Sundays of the month
and sections of the choir sing Mattins at St. Andrew's on the first Sunday and Choral
Evensong at St. Andrew’s on the third Sunday of the month.
Members of the
choir are also involved with the Quantock choir at Sampford Brett.
Our music comes
from a wide range of sources, and hopefully provides both continuity with the
past and the best of the ever developing modern repertoire. The choir is
affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music
which runs workshops throughout the year giving us the opportunity to sing
with other choirs, try new music and improve our technical skills.

Thanks to the tireless
devotion (and persistence !) of our choir master Gerald Stowell the
choir have rightly gained a reputation for the clear and free flowing
singing of the psalms to Anglican chant.
